Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Wordness, our games, and how they work.

📋 General

Yes, 100% free. All games and assessments are completely free to play. No hidden costs, subscriptions, or premium tiers. Our mission is to democratize access to cognitive training tools.

Wordness is a platform of science-backed word games designed to train your vocabulary, creativity, and cognitive skills. We turn psychological assessments from Harvard and other research institutions into engaging games anyone can play.

Wordness was created by Blue Suave et Cie, a team passionate about cognitive science and game design. We collaborate with linguists and researchers to ensure our games are both fun and scientifically sound.

Absolutely! All our games are family-friendly. Wordleness and Tug of Word are great for all ages. The Divergent Association Task (DAT) is recommended for ages 12+ due to the vocabulary required.

🎮 Games

The DAT is a creativity assessment developed at Harvard. You provide 10 words as different from each other as possible, and we measure the semantic distance between them using AI. Higher distance indicates greater divergent thinking ability - a key component of creativity. Take the test →

Decouply challenges you to find words that are semantically unrelated to a given prompt word. The goal is to maximize your semantic distance - the further your word is from the prompt in meaning, the more points you score. It's like the DAT, but gamified! Play Decouply →

The RAT tests convergent thinking - the opposite of divergent thinking. You're given three seemingly unrelated words and must find a single word that connects them all. For example: "cream" + "skate" + "water" → "ice". Try the RAT →

While Wordle focuses on letter positions, Semantly is about meaning. You guess words and receive a semantic similarity score (0-100) showing how close your guess is in meaning to the secret word. No letter hints - just meaning! Play Semantly →

Tug of Word is a strategic battle where you compete against AI on a semantic spectrum. Given two polar concepts (like "hot" vs "cold"), you take turns naming words to pull toward your side. It tests semantic nuance and strategic thinking. Play Tug of Word →

📊 Scoring & Science

We use advanced Natural Language Processing (NLP) models trained on billions of words to calculate semantic distances and relationships. Each game has its own scoring algorithm based on the underlying cognitive science research.

Semantic distance measures how far apart two words are in meaning. "Cat" and "dog" are semantically close (both animals). "Cat" and "democracy" are semantically far apart. Our AI calculates this distance using word embeddings - mathematical representations of meaning.

Yes! The DAT was developed and validated by researchers at Harvard and published in peer-reviewed journals. It correlates with other established creativity measures and takes only 4 minutes. It's one of the fastest reliable creativity assessments available.
